I’m waiting for a shipment of yarn to make a wedding gift for my cousin so in the meantime I don’t want to start a larger, time consuming project. Since I knit all year to have gifts for birthdays and holidays, quick knits are great time fillers. I first made this pattern, The Mimosa Slouchy Hat, a couple of years ago when my oldest daughter first moved to Chicago. When Heather moved to a climate that actually gets snow (pretty rare here in Central Texas), I knit and crocheted her a bunch of scarves, hats, gloves and other goodies to keep my baby warm. Her black Mimosa slouch is her favorite hat so I decided to do some stash busting and make her another.
This pattern is from Caron and, despite my dislike for Simply Soft, I still have some and that’s what her first Mimosa was made of so I decided to use it again. This time in soft blue. Simply Soft is very popular yarn and it comes in an amazing rainbow of colors and has a lovely sheen. It’s also easy to get at any of the major box stores and even Amazon (linked to it via the photo). Still I find it fuzzes up even while working with it and splits easily. However my biggest complaint is that it hurts my arthritic hands to knit with it. I think it’s because it has little stretch. In any case, I’ve sold off most of my inventory and won’t buy anymore.
This pattern has a lovely cables and lace design. It is a four row repeat and it’s very easy to memorize making this a nice design for travel or just sitting in front of the TV as you don’t have to stare at charts or remember where you are. Here is my work in progress.
Here are more views the finished hat. I’m going to package it up with the single colored Amanda Hat I made last week and ship them both off to Heather. If you like this pattern, it’s a free pattern. Here’s the link to it: Mimosa Slouchy Beanie. Are you building your gift stash? What kinds of quick projects do you love?
